The inaugural Coldwell Banker Jamaica Realty Backgammon Tournament was held Saturday, June 4, at the Spanish Court Hotel, St Andrew had an unusual twist. Businessman Roy D'Cambre outlasted the field and scooped the first top prize in the master's division and pocketed $250,000, while the OAaSIS International Foundation was allowed to showcase and offer Jamaican art for sale.
The OAaSIS-staged exhibition was strategically of works by Prince Ewan Dain who focusing on the environment, recycles discarded material to create his durable art.
Meantime the backgammon tournament attracted 36 players who vied for J$600,000 in total prize money. Lamont Haskins, visiting from New York, secured the top spot in the intermediate division and $40,000 for his efforts. The tournament featured the island's leading backgammon players plus the added presence of Antionette-Marie Williams, a doyenne of the backgammon scene in her home town, New York City. Co-ordinator of the World Backgammon Championships in Monte Carlo every year, she came specially for the tournament.
It was sports at many levels offering something for everyone, despite religion, colour, culture, creed. The food was good, and soon after the winners were awarded, Coldwell's Andrew Issa introduced some spontaneous fun with the 'travelling of the jacket' initially worn by Kynan Cooke.
Backgammon is fast becoming a popular option to bridge, pool, bingo for some Jamaicans especially businesspersons networking across Jamaica. Following a spade of weekly games at varied locations, the tournament is the brainchild of Alastair Macbeath.
Main sponsors were Wisynco, Best Dressed Chicken, Wray & Nephew, Track Price Plus, The Spanish Court hotel and Coldwell Banker Jamaica Realty.

Review: First Annual Kingston City Run, March 10, 2013 Jamaica, known as home of the world’s fastest man and the birthplace of many world class sprinters. With media focus primarily on our sprinters, I am sure many people around the world erroneously wonder if anyone in Jamaica runs further than 800 meters. Of course we do have middle and long distance runners, we also have marathon runners. There has been an annual marathon in Negril for over ten years now, and in 2013 our capital city Kingston hosted its first half-marathon.

Review: Do the Reggae: A Celebration of Jamaican Culture through Film at BAM - New York This year, Jamaica celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence from Great Britain. The essence of this celebration is the idea that Jamaica, as a nation, is a reflection of several key themes that relate to human survival. That a nation of little over 2.7 million people could have such a great impact on the world is a remarkable fact. It is then no doubt that Jamaica is blessed beyond belief with people who have remarkable talent, remarkable strength, and remarkable aspirations.
Movie Review : Heart of Summer Well-read moviegoers will appreciate the references to classic Shakespearean characters Romeo and Juliet and the fair maiden Ophelia as they take in the warm and fuzzy, yet heart wrenching story of Omari and Naomi in the recently released film Heart of Summer. Indeed, the story of forbidden love is a universal one. However, Jamaican-born Director Adrian Allen puts a new twist on it, incorporating modern urban life, Caribbean sensibilities, and religious issues that build to a compelling crescendo.

Review: Patriotism Aglow On Emancipation Eve Another wonderful evening in ‘E-Park’, as it is fondly known, with the remarkable NDTC Dancers and Singers doing their mento thing, eyes fastened on them for as long as the performances lasted and no one bored or looking to lose their seats for any reason. E-Park was jam packed with thousands of folkscarrying balloons and flags or wearing some combination of black, green and gold; they came early eitherto secure a seat or to find a place that would be a perfect vantage point from which they could capture the view.
