Jamaica Primetime
Review: First Annual Kingston City Run, March 10, 2013 Jamaica, known as home of the world’s fastest man and the birthplace of many world class sprinters. With media focus primarily on our sprinters, I am sure many people around the world erroneously wonder if anyone in Jamaica runs further than 800 meters. Of course we do have middle and long distance runners, we also have marathon runners. There has been an annual marathon in Negril for over ten years now, and in 2013 our capital city Kingston hosted its first half-marathon.

Review: Do the Reggae: A Celebration of Jamaican Culture through Film at BAM - New York This year, Jamaica celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence from Great Britain. The essence of this celebration is the idea that Jamaica, as a nation, is a reflection of several key themes that relate to human survival. That a nation of little over 2.7 million people could have such a great impact on the world is a remarkable fact. It is then no doubt that Jamaica is blessed beyond belief with people who have remarkable talent, remarkable strength, and remarkable aspirations.
Movie Review : Heart of Summer Well-read moviegoers will appreciate the references to classic Shakespearean characters Romeo and Juliet and the fair maiden Ophelia as they take in the warm and fuzzy, yet heart wrenching story of Omari and Naomi in the recently released film Heart of Summer. Indeed, the story of forbidden love is a universal one. However, Jamaican-born Director Adrian Allen puts a new twist on it, incorporating modern urban life, Caribbean sensibilities, and religious issues that build to a compelling crescendo.

Review: Patriotism Aglow On Emancipation Eve Another wonderful evening in ‘E-Park’, as it is fondly known, with the remarkable NDTC Dancers and Singers doing their mento thing, eyes fastened on them for as long as the performances lasted and no one bored or looking to lose their seats for any reason. E-Park was jam packed with thousands of folkscarrying balloons and flags or wearing some combination of black, green and gold; they came early eitherto secure a seat or to find a place that would be a perfect vantage point from which they could capture the view.
Event Review - Readings In The Park, Kingston Jamaica On July 20, 2012 as the hot Friday afternoon turned to cool evening and the rush of day transformed into an audience quietly being seated in front of the lilac glow of a huge, softly-lit crescent of a covering over the stage at Emancipation Park in New Kingston, decked with black, gold and green, boldly wrapping the huge trunks of massive and erect palm trees and gently hugging those of the smaller ones, Kwame Dawes again took to stage and there, warmed the anxiously awaiting crowd to a cool and magical evening of the birth of what would prove to be incomparable, literary satisfaction.

Review: Luciano Up Close & Personal at 'The Garage! - New York May 2012 Backed by the Ruff Stuff band, Luciano return to NYC at ‘The Garage’ night club in the Bronx was very appropriate and fitting for the Mother's Day Tribute. For three straight hours “the messenger” brought joy to the Mother’s Day celebration. I entered the venue just as the singer was being introduced. And I heard Luciano’s voice before seeing him. He was dressed in full military attire

Review: Jazz in The Gardens 2012 Mayor Shirley Gibson knows how to throw a party, with a few (20.000-40,000 depending on who’s reporting) of her closest family and friends! She orders up the perfect cool weather, chiding the few raindrops that dared make an appearance; she calls on the elegant and sophisticated MC Lyte (she hast changed! From back in tha day :o) to coordinate the evening’s events, and then she taps a few performers to grace her stage, and throws in a gazillion food and merchandise vendors. Aah evening delight!

Review: “Souldancing” with Jean Lowrie-Chin in New York She warmed the room with her smile like the Caribbean sun and the audience anxiously waited while they basked in the beauty of her gentle presence, a scarf, with the colors of the Jamaican flag, gently cascading down the front of her dress. A little behind her scheduled arrival at Ruder Finn, Inc. because of the unceasing evening rain, her pleasant personality just shone right through and put everyone at ease.
Review: Actress and Author Andrene Bonner - Old Jamaican Bragadaps - New Age Performance Andrene Bonner’s new approach to living room entertainment is a bonoonoonoos boost for the Caribbean and its Diaspora. She is one of a handful who has carried the light of Jamaican theatre to North America. The theatre scene in Jamaica is rich, multilayered, and Caribbean-affirming. It’s black people being able to do classical Equus, The Taming of the Shrew or their own award-winning works. It’s Trevor Rhone, Dennis Scott and Miss Lou and many who have come after. At the core, it’s our own day to day experience, bitter, triumphant, joyful, reflecting back at us.
Event Review: Atlanta Jamaican Association Celebrates Jamaica's 49th Year of Independence In what was obviously a most spectacular precursor to the grandest of grand Independence Balls imaginable for “Jamaica’s 50th” in 2012, The Atlanta Jamaican Association (The AJA) certainly “put on the Ritz” with glitzy pomp and ceremony to a degree that has not been realized in Atlanta during Jamaica’s Independence celebrations in recent times.
Play Review: 'Adopted Child' at Stages Theatre, Kingston, Jamaica Its not every day that the adopted child - often seen as disturbed, and a mischief maker - makes a comeback and takes charge. But in Adopted Child, a roots play by Jamaican playwright Paul O Beale, it happens.
Review: Hartford Taste Of The Caribbean Jerk Fest 2011
The festival starts early, like 11am or so, but the best part is not until the evening hours. I looked forward all year to this event as it is one of the few times I get to see the Jamaicans I have gotten to know over this long period of time that I have been in CT. This year however, a darkness loomed as an impending weather pattern was threatening the turnout.

The parade, food, music, and free concert were enjoyed by all!

Most people who attended said they thought it was more organized and child-oriented than the ones they had attended in the past. Some who didn’t go asked, “ What’s so different bout dis Jerkfes … there have been so many,”

Art Review - Jamaica Arts Odyssey: Exchanging Realities What is there to discover in Jamaican art? What pleasures can it hold for the "average" person, caught up in the bustle and whirl of trying to make a living? To pause even to glance at works of art may be seen as a strain, much less to discuss said works and their potential impact on our lives.
