It seems the discussion on a Senate seat in the Jamaican Government for the diaspora is heating up again. It is ironic that it comes after the heated debate and court case on dual citizenship. I am interested in hearing more on how this seat would work. I know there is this discussion of giving the Jamaican diaspora a voice in the “decision making and governance” of Jamaica but I can’t help but be skeptical. It seems to me that this seat is to pacify those who want to say I live abroad but am very involved in what happens in Jamaica or it will be used as a lobby tool to get more from the Jamaican diaspora. Is giving up a seat to the Jamaican diaspora productive? Will it help to tackle the key issues facing Jamaica? I am waiting to hear more before I drink the cool aid

Today I read an article on this robot fish that can detect pollution in the sea. In the last few year there has been complaints from various environmental groups in Jamaica about the ships and hotels on the Jamaican North Coast polluting the beaches. Maybe we can get a few Robofish to help

The press is reporting on the uproar over a Russian company’s new ice cream. The ad for the ice cream is above. The slogan is even more interesting - “Everyone’s talking about it: dark inside white!”. With the commericialization of President Obama we are sure to see more questionable items. I am sure someone is probably collecting everything and will have a exhibit of Pres Obama merchandise in the future.

The genocide in Rwanda – Photo Source: Georgia Southern University
I remember the first person I heard call the violence in Jamaica a genocide. I did not take it serious as I thought it was just us typical Jamaicans exaggerating. Recently I have heard quite a few people refer to the violence in Jamaica as genocide. In my mind this just not apply. When I think of the word I think of Bosnia,Germany, Rwanda and Darfur. They mentioned that because most of the violence has a political root and is politically driven. I thought that was a stretch so I looked up the definition.
Genocide: the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group.

Anyone remember the high school fete days in the Jamaica in the 1980’s? Girl Schools Kingston like St Hugh’s, St Andrews, Queens, Holy Childhood and Immaculate would have day time parties on Saturdays to raise money. The music was mainly disco and soul. The sets/sound systems I remember were Peacemakers (Squeeze), Colossus and Soul Sensation. The JBC TV show “Where It’s At” used to play many of the songs. And yes there was break dancing danceMany of the songs are now on Youtube. I posted a few in music video in our forums. Enjoy…
