So I am reading this story  “Happiness Is … Being Old, Male and Republican” and wondered how true the political part of the statement was. My friends who are liberals do seem to get more emotional about politics  issues than the ones who I know are Republicans. Now my small sample may not mean anything but is does have you wondering.

After watching the season finale of 24 last night and then the evening news I started to reflect on the whole torture debate.  In the last 1/2 hour of the show the “bad guy” was caught and was not talking. He was going to lawyer up and by all indications the government was not going to get anything from him. Now if many of fans of the show are honest you wanted the “answers” out of him by any means necessary. Torture him if necessary. Now the 10.00 pm news started right after 24 and there was a segment on Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, denying she knew about water boarding. It just seems a bit ironic and I wonder of the audience who just watched 24 is concerned about torture.  Are they fine with it on TV to get information by in means necessary but not in real life?

I just read they are erecting a Columbus statue in Bahamas. I remember a few years ago how some people were upset over the visit by a descendant of Columbus to Jamaica in 2004 and the events for the visit. Their would be a wreath laid at the Columbus statue in St Ann. I remember a letter sent to the Gleaner questioning Jamaica honoring Columbus. There were people calling the radio programs in uproar about the event.  I wonder if there will be a debate in the Bahamas.

Pittsburgh Steeler star player, James Harrison, is refusing to visit the  White House this Thursday for the traditional Super Bowl winner congratulations by the president.  He did the same thing in 2006 when the Steelers won and Bush was in office. Below is his explanation.
“This is how I feel — if you want to see the Pittsburgh Steelers, invite us when we don’t win the Super Bowl. As far as I’m concerned, he [Obama] would’ve invited Arizona if they had won.”

Yes, Mr Harrison it is a tradition and if your team lost you would not have been invited.  Why the silly act. If it was politically motivated I could understand but the explanation given just seems silly and lame. Regardless of your political persuasion meeting the President  is suppose to be a good thing. I guess he won’t have any stories to tell the kids or grand kids.

Many of you may have read the story about the “so called” attack on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reports. When I first read it all I could remember is the Maroons versus the British from my history class days at high school in Jamaica. I loved history and recalled my fascinating when our history teacher Miss Grant talked about the Maroons. She was one of my favorite teachers. She had a way to describe things to take you back to that time and place.

There were also the great myths we learned about the Maroons. The one I remember is hearing how Nanny caught bullets in her buttocks and farted (fired) them back at the British.
