Kids' Guide to Jamaica
Children in JamaicaPublished Jul 28, 2006
Here you will learn something about school life in Jamaica and how Jamaican children spend their time.
The school day usually begins at 8:00 in the morning and lasts until 2:00 pm or 2:30 pm in the afternoon. Some schools may have extra lessons for students who wish to improve on their studies.
The children at Jamaican schools wear a uniform. These are normally the school colors. Below is a picture of Jamaican children in uniform.
School children in Jamaica have several vacations
They get: one week during Easter, 3 months in the summer, 3 days National Heroes week, 2 Labor day, 2 weeks during Christmas and the new years.
All children take part in some type of sports at school. Track and Field and other sports such as football (soccer), cricket, swimming, field hockey, tennis, netball, and basketball are played.
Some of the games kids play when they are dandy shandy. One of the favorite board games played by Jamaican children is "lou do".
As in many countries today one of the craze of children in Jamaica is electronic games played on the television screen.

We visited a school in Lucea, i forget the name of the school, but i do remember it was a primary school and it was on a hill. the children were happy as could be, even though they had VERY little compared to the schools in Canada. They had a stick and were happy to play with that. Going into the classrooms and meeting the principle and sitting in with the class they were fascinated with us and i let the younger kids touch my hair. i have blonde hair, so that was a big thing for them. They did have uniforms however i do not remember the colors being Jamaican. i do recall them to be a khaki colour. We brought supplies for the children (pencils, pens, rulers, etc.), and they were sooo happy to have these. Shanele is correct. Soccer is called football, and that makes sense. I had a long-distance boyfriend down there for 18 months who had 2 younger siblings. the above information is correct.
