Navy Island

Published Sep 20, 2010

Navy Island Beach is a great place to visit if you’re looking for something a little more secluded. The major attractions on Navy Island are its clear waters, white sand beach, and opportunities to participate in water sport activities. There are African-style cottages on the island where visitors can stay, as well as some very good casual restaurants, include the Admiralty, which provide traditional Jamaican dishes. Navy Island can only be reached by boat, but at certain times of the year, it may attract a sizable crowd. Located just 0.8 miles from the Lighthouse in Port Antonio on Jamaica’s eastern coast, it is close to Berridale, which provides the chance for town explorations in addition to beach activity.

There are several attractive options for accommodations near Navy Island, include the Jamaica Palace Hotel (2.5 miles, 80 rooms), Goblin Hill Villas at San San (3.5 miles, 28 rooms), Strawberry Hill (19.3 miles, 14 rooms), Christar Villas (24.0 miles, 42 rooms),

Hilton Kingston (25.4 miles, 300 rooms), Jamaica Pegasus (25.6 miles, 310 rooms), and the Courtleigh Hotel and Suites (25.6 miles, 132 rooms).

While a day at the beach is often the best way to get close to Jamaica’s natural beauty, other natural attractions are worth a visit. For the adventurous, there is Rio Grande Rafting, located 3.2 miles to the southwest of Navy Island. For those interested in the history of Jamaica, the Lighthouse in Port Antonio (0.8 miles NE) is a good choice. Other natural scenic wonders can be experienced at Athenry Gardens (4.0 miles SE), Somerset Falls (5.9 miles W), and Blue Mountain-John Crow National Park (12.7 miles SW).

Dining at Navy Island offers many choices of casual restaurants, or for visitors willing to make a short drive, the French cuisine at the Blue Mountain Inn (20.9 miles SW) is an excellent option.

Good Afternoon:

Navy Island is currently undeveloped. There are no facilities open and no public ferry service although private boats can be hired. I understand the the Island, which is owned by the Jamaican Government, is under the control of Dale Westin, the general manager at the Errol Flynn Marina. He can be reached at dwestin@portjam.com
