Since I am such a good hostes http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/grin.gif I took my relatives visiting from London to the mountains last week. I wanted to stay over night because it is a lot of driving in one day but they didnt think they would want to. Of course once they arrived and wanted to see more, I gave them the "I told you so" speech.
The drive from Edmonton to Banff is 4 hours and a bit if you do the speed limit. We got there in 3 hours http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/grin.gif

So, we spent a very lovely day in Banff but Jasper will have to wait for another trip.

Road into the national park from Calgary. It was cool to hear their reactions as we got closer to the mountains http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

Entrance into the National Park. You do have to pay to visit the parks although I dont recall at the moment what the cost was. You can buy daily and weekly family passess which are much cheaper than the individual ones.

Merciful Father! Majestic!

I clicked on the link and this magnificent view greeted my tired eyes. This reminds me of the mountains I saw just as the plane was landing in LA. I was in total awe.

Thank you once again Miss Nylah. http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/70459-hugs.gif

Because I wasnt paying attention to the signs http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/grin.gif I drove right pass the town of Banff. Instead of doing a u-turn in the middle of the road, I just decided to drive to Lake Louise. Lake Louise is approx 45km from the town of banff. Much road upgrades are happening at the moment which is great. The roads between the two towns are not twinned which can cause some serious traffice delays on long weekends. They are now twinning the roads, so within a couple of months there will be two lanes flowing in both directions

Next my cousins and I went on the Gondola. We couldnt go all the way to the top of the mountain because there was a Grizzly and 4 baby cubs in the area. Since it is possible to bump into them on the walking trails, the gondola operators would only allow ppl about 1/2 up the mountain side. There is an obeservation deck and an Interpretative centre at the 1/2 point. But even then for the first half an hour, we had to be driven from the gondolas to the centre because the park rangers werent a 100% sure EXACTLY where the bear and her cubs were.

We did get a chance to see the mother and 2 of her cubs on the rid up. http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/yahoo.gif I was so excited and fearful that I would drop my camera that I didnt use the zoom to get a close up pix of the bears.

Banff has really great shopping - expensive but nice. Lots of Japanese tourists visit the area for the mountains of course but also to see the Northern Lights. I bought some great runners at the Helen Hansen store. They sell gorgeous ski and outdoor clothing wear. I stupidly wore sandals - I have no idea what I was thinking - I of course had a back ache because I had no foot support given all the trail walking we did. http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif So, I popped into the store and got some reasonable footwear.

If I was permitted to take pictures inside some of the art stores I would have. We saw some beautiful First Nation and Inuit artwork. Just stunning stuff. My cousin and I were just in our glory!

This is the Three Sisters Mountain range just outside Banff. It was one of my favorite mountain ranges. It is represented a great deal in First Nation art - the mountain range is very scared to them. Let me see if I can find any info on the mountain range.

the water is the same colour as in the Caribbean. I tried to google but didnt find the info I wanted but I know the hazy blue comes from a mineral deposit that runs into the lake from the glaciers surrounding it. When you canoe on the water you cannot see the bottom of the lake.

Lake Louise is another popular wedding spot for obvious reasons. Once upon a time I wanted to get married there as well.

In the winter time it is magical. http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/70377-loveeyes.gif They have horse-drawn carriages with fur blankets and spiked hot chocolate to keep you warm. Really romantic stuff.

Found this:

The melting ice fills the rivers and lakes for many miles. Glacier water is milky near the glacier, then it gets more and more an emerald shade, then becomes clear as it travels further, and the sediment settles to the bottom. The color is a result of all the sediment suspended in the glacier ice for many years. There are several lakes that are a different shade of color as they are further from the glacier.

This is not just a feature of this glacier, we remember in the Furka Pass, Switzerland, seeing exactly the same color water changing from milky, to emerald to “normal” as the miles were traveled. The color of the water, especially when the sun shines just right, is one of the reasons Lake Louise is so beautiful.

thanks Bandanna - that was the info I was looking for on the glacier water that I couldnt find last night http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/70409-waytogo.gif

The lake water changes colour throughout the day. It is a really neat effect.

The lakes in the park are protected, so they all have that incredible blue color around here. They strictly enforce lake use and pollution which keeps them not so dirty as others.

If you see the lakes outside the protected zone, you would get the willies http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif

sorry folks, I have only 3 shots of the mountains left that I took from a moving car....yes driving and pointing a camera http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/704555_dwl.gif

I wished we had more than a day to explore the area. I have seen most of it time and time again but I dont ever get tired of it. The national park is so vast that a few days are needed to take it in. I do plan to drive out to Jasper before the snow falls this year. Just to give you an idea, Jasper is nearly 300km AWAY from Banff and you still havent reached the edge of the Park. If I do then I will be sure to share.

that is every cool that you lived there and can relate to the photos http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/70409-waytogo.gif

It was hard to convince my relatives that one day would only give us a tip of the iceberg but after they got there they finally understood how vast the Park was. One of my cousins likes to do the same things I like to do and wanted to try some more hiking trails, etc. I told her if they would have listened to me we could have been better prepared to go exploring http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif

Next time they come to Canada though http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/grin.gif

I love the 3 sisters mountains. They are so intense looking in person for some reason.
