So a girlfriend and I decided to take a two day trip to Minni/St. Paul to do the big mall and downtown Nicolette.

Here is my assessment of Minneapolis...love it love it love it.

These were the NICEST people I have met anywhere in America, and I will have to do an entire segment on my hotel...Country Inns and Suites, directly across the street from the Mall of America.

This hotel is not a 5 star, but I got 10 star treatment from the staff.

Before we even arrive GF and I called the hotel with several questions. Amber at the hotel was so kind and patient to answer each one with a smile I could feel through the phone.

When we arrived the staff (Brittany) was most accommodating and gave us a large choice of rooms. Everyone greeted you with a genuine smile, and the atmosphere at this place is just GREAT.

After we checked in, we asked Pierre at the front desk for some directions and dining advice. Upon learning that we were headed to the mall, Pierre supplied us with coupons for a free appetizer at Bubba Gumps Shrimp place.

Bubba Gumps appetizer was the BOMB

So first impressions of the mall is that it is a HUGE, and interesting place to take kids. There is an entire amusement park inside, and I think I heard mention of an aquarium underneath.

This is a place you can get married in the mall...hey Larry...hint,,,,,hint

SO we hit the mall for a few hours and pick up a few things,

This one guy who has a cart pulls us over

You are NOT from Minnesota

No

You are from the south

Yes
Tennessee

yes (howd he get that one right?)

You two ladies are gorgeous
I love your hair
But stop letting them cut your side burns so short
Trust me let them grow a little and you will look years younger
Now I want you to come over here and sit down, but before I start my presentation, I must ask you not to hug me at the end because I am gay.

Now I want to show you how you can have beautiful nails (then he demonstrates, and yeah the product is good. We nogitiate a price and I buy it)

So are you two a couple?

No this is my friend, she has a man and so do I.

Oh too bad, you'd make a nice couple.

Nice shoes by the way.

I mean this guy was a TRIP.

Anyway proceeding on down the mall we just shop and shop, and then go to the hotel for a rest.

We didn't go anywhere that night, we hit the sack. I go to get ice and the maintance man says. I'll get that for you...what room are you in?

102

You go on back to your room I will bring it to your door.

I lost .25 in the drink machine, and he reaches in his pocket, and says "Here I will give you your quarter back."

These people are so nice it is unbelievable.

The next day we hit the mall for a few hours and then head downtown to Nicolette street for lunch and more shopping.

We are on the train and it is a Twins game today. Younger people let older people have their seats, and complete strangers just talk to us. They want to know how we are and give us advice, directions. These have to be the nicest people I have met in light years.

It's a picture perfect day and the Minneaplolis folks know how to tell the gods they appreciate it. I think the whole town turned out to sun worship and soak it up.

I must mention that the service at TGI Friday, Chevys,Zylos, and Crave was par excellance. I wish I could pick up every server in Memphis and send them there for lessons....hell even the McDonalds at the airport. These folks are special I tell you...just WONDERFUL people.

So I see this statue of Mary Tyler Moore tossing her hat in the air and can't make the connection. So we ask our FINE A bartender at Crave what it is and he reminds me that fictional Mary, Lou and company worked in Minneapolis and the series was shot there.

Meanwhile back at the hotel, this is what is going on.

I have a GREAT WONDERFUL SWEET BEAUTIFUL gf who keeps Mika and Maya for me when I go out of town. She is diabetic and has turned it into a new science. She has researched everything that is good for her and eliminated everything that is bad.

So she and the hubby and kids went to Orlando FL and there she discovered this arnolds sandwhich thin flat bread that has good points for her condition. Problem....the stores in Memphis don't carry it and will not respond to her request.

She really won't let me do much for her in exchange for saving me untold hundreds of dollars and boarding fees, not to mention the peace of mind I feel when away knowing that the girls are happy and well cared for.

So I decide to research if I can find this bread in Minni, and BINGO it's at a store 4 miles from the hotel. I tell the manager (Joan)and she asks me how I am going to get it. I say I will take a cab. She says no,, I will send an employee for it for you, it will be here when you get back. I give her an envelope with the money for the bread and a 10.00 tip for the employee. When I get back the bread is there for me, and she hands me the 10.00 back, REFUSED to take it.

See what I mean?????

Marilyn

The housekeeper left us little notes on the hotel scratch pad everyday......welcome enjoy your stay....thank you for the tip you left me....

I have never experienced this before. I have never had someone thank me for the room tips. Even in Jamaica when I leave them everyday I will see the housekeeper on the property, but I never had one say thank you.

The van driver....if they could have been any nicer anywhere I won't believe it. Finally I sit down with the manager to tell her how impressed I am with her hotel. I have stayed at hotels where the rooms were 500.00 a night and not enjoyed my stay as much.

So we have a early flight out the next day, and with sadness I leave Minneapolis behind. I am adding you to my list of great cities to visit in the US, and I WILL be back.

My one regret, Laurel was at work and I didn't get to spend time with her...but next time, and there WILL be a next time.....Oh and Nanook....I did see many many beautiful lakes from the air.

Dearest Laurel
If ever a city made an impression on me it was yours. It makes me better understand your sweet nature having been there, I see it is inherent to your area. There are some wonderful people there. The south could take a lesson, and we are supposedly know for OUR hospitality.

Nice Mini report.

I was in Mineapolis for a week...in February. http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/mad.gif Of course that trip was job related. Didn't get to do much more than shop and eat. Yes the people were very friendly and chatty.

The one thing that really struck me was going to the gas station and seeing people pay for gas with checks. http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/eek2.gif This was in 2000. I couldn't believe it.

Nice to see some sights, all I saw was snow covered streets. http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif

The whole time I was there I was thinking.....who do I know with kids....this place is a kid's paradise, there were even eating places geared just for them. I passed one and there was this giant fake yellow anaconda wrapped around a tree branch, but it moves, so to me that is just like the real thing, and I went into immediate sweats....I HATE SNAKES.

Anyway, before he is too big and can still get into stuff like this I say take him.

Postlude.....

Upon immediate return to Memphis....it began....the reality that we were NOT in Minnesota anymore. I sent GF a link to this report, and I hope she reads it, because she can back me up that on the van ride from the airport we were with this loud talking, incoherant, cussing, babbling IDIOT.(typical young MEmphis style.)...she looked at me, I looked at her, and right then and there we knew we had stepped back into the other side.

She and I were thinking the same thing. We are not in Minnesota anymore.

Then she had a problem with her purchase from the trip and had to go to Macy's. The sales lady was rude, but the manager was very nice to her about the issue. But having interacted with the sales lady first, she noted to me that the difference in ALL the customer service we received there and here, was evident.

One poster here said it is almost like stepping into another world when you go there, and I sooooooooooo agree. It took me a little while to adjust...to people just starting up pleasant conversations with you , and they didn't "want" anything from you....and I have to say it, although I wanted to put this delicately....I did not feel any of the racial strife and issues that I feel here in the south on a daily basis. It truly was an entirely different breath of fresh air, and I am going back for more before summer's end.

To Marilyn,

So happy you enjoyed Minneapolis. I love living and working here.

It is a wonderful city – and our city parks are truly beautiful as well.

There’s one right downtown that is lovely for walking – just a few blocks from where you took those photos!

Sorry to hear about your trip after the fact! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_hug.gif

If you want to stop and SMELL a city, I highly recommend Sioux City, Iowa! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/704555_dwl.gif
Only been there once, and ever since in the schedule bidding system there was a
permanent bid levereged at 100 point to avoid such delikes. http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/70394-bawlout.gif

There are 3 distinct smells that you drive through on the way from the airport to downtown.
Our very knowledgable driver took pleasure in quizzing us on it's origins only to tell
us the source after we gave up trying due to brain damage.

First was a relatively mild aroma of a sewage treatment plant. As we'd find out later,
it was the most pleasant of the three, and this is where we re-commenced breathing the next morning. http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/70409-waytogo.gif

Then as we crossed over the railroad with cars loaded with a chemical whose name now escapes, a pungent smell lick us that was the most
disguisting malordour me ever did smell... until we got to the hotel.

Permeating the hotel room with a light dose, that became leathal when outside was the everpresent
gas that evidently is a by-product of producing TOFU! I don't know what it the world the
production of tofu involves, but I have never before or since smelled anything as repulsive! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/vomit.gif

With a massive headache, the crew departed the next morning enjoying the airport sewage dump in the air.
Everytime I smell sewage anywhere and it smells bad to me, I'm reminded of Sioux City and then
the smell becomes bareable.

Each airport in the world with commercial air service has a 3 letter IATA airport code.
Once you see the 3 letter code for Sioux Getaway Airport, it will make sense. http://www.flysiouxgateway.com/guide.htm

Too Right ... BeBe was one block on the North side of Marilyn's lunch place, and I was one block away on the South Side ~

When you called to say you were at Zelo ... I had just returned from my lunch - a peanut butter sandwich http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif ... my mouth so watered for their tomato basil house soup ~ it is to die for!!!

close ~ but no cigar ....

When you said you had to go back to the hotel for a rest ... I wanted to tell you we have some resting rooms here - you could have taken your siesta till I got off work ... Palomino makes a slammin Scratch Margarita -

next time ... As BeBe said - sweet lakes and parks right here in town - you would enjoy walking them ~ great people watching ....

Hot Peppa ... sorry - did not chat back to you regarding writing checks ...

well - I suppose some still write checks for this n that ... I expect my dad does ... quite certain my sister and her family still do (small farming town) -

me - as Loops knows - I do not even have any checks ~ http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/70365-flirt.gif Back when I did still have and carry checks - they used to take them from me at the gas stations up north & and when visiting my Grandie out in So.Dak ...

We write checks for EVERYTHING up here! The only two places that no longer take them that I can think of are a couple of fast food places. Hopefully it will stay that way too, cause otherwise I could never keep track of what I'm doing/did.
