 Master Carver
In 2004 I was doing an art exhibit at Ja - Ja Originals art gallery, and stayed in Negril for Three weeks. During my three week stay I met a lot of artist, of all disciplines along that seven miles of beach. The one artist that I had a special respect for, was a carver who I respectfully call "Baba Ras 3 Face" This man is a master carver, and carves he carves an image he calls "The 3 Face".The wood he uses for his carvings is called lignum vitae,( iron wood), which means "tree of life" in latin. This wood is extremely hard Baba Ras uses a knife that he made by hand, to carve and shape the wood. I bought two pieces from him one small and refined, the other large and rough. This past October, I crossed paths one night with Baba Ras 3 Face. We were both glad to see the other, and talked awhile. During our conversation I explained to him, that the small piece I'd bought from him in 2004 was my favorite, and I was wearing it. I'd been interested in carving wood, and asked him how did he create 3 Face? He explained to me he never has shown anyone in his thirty years as a carver, but he would show me how he carved 3 Face. For the next two hours, I was in school as I watch in the moonlight, this master carver bring the wood too life. When he completed the piece, he gave it to me, along with the other four small piece he had. I offered him some money he only wanted twenty US dollars, I gave him a little over that amount , and one of may hand painted t-shirts. Baba Ras gave me two pounds of lignum vitae, and told me to make as many carvings as I can from that block of wood, this is all he wanted me to do with this, he wanted no money for it. I toke this picture of him and promised that I would post it on the internet, for him. Yes Baba Ras so far I have carved five pieces, you would be proud my Brother, Peace & Love. - H.R. Olfus
