Jamaica Overview
Jamaica, Land We Love - The Jamaican National Anthem
Published Dec 1, 1995The Jamaican National Anthem is "Jamaica, Land We Love" . All persons should stand at attention, (i.e., heels together) at the playing of the National Anthem and men should remove their hats. Singing of the National Anthem should form part of the ceremony of raising and lowering of the flag at the beginning and end of term in schools and at Independence celebrations. The Anthem is the creative work of four persons, the late Rev. and Hon. Hugh Sherlock, OJ, OBE, the late Hon. Robert Lightbourne, OJ, the late Mapletoft Poulle and Mrs. Poulle (now Mrs. Raymond Lindo).

Eternal Father, Bless our Land,
Guard us with thy mighty hand,
Keep us free from evil powers,
Be our light through countless hours,
To our leaders, great defender,
Grant true wisdom from above,
Justice, truth be ours forever,
Jamaica, land we love,
Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica, land we love
Teach us true respect for all,
Stir response to duty's call,
Strengthen us the weak to cherish,
Give us vision lest we perish,
Knowledge send us Heavenly Father,
Grant true wisdom from above,
Justice, truth be ours forever,
Jamaica, land we love,
Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica, land we love
Note: We bolded the word "Guard" as some people say "Guide" which is not in the original anthem.

I really appreciate the effort you've made to ensure that the correct word "Guard" is used instead of "Guide" which is often sung in error. I'm always annoyed when our people spoil our Anthem by singing wha nuh go so! However, you didn't point out another common blunder---that of people singing "To our leaders, great defenders"--- putting an "s" where none was originally intended. This changes the entire meaning, because it then implies that our earthly leaders (PM, MPs, etc) are our 'great defenders'. What it is really asking is for God (our "Great Defender") to grant true wisdom to our earthly leaders. Please see the following website for the original wording of the Anthem. It professes to be "the authoritative version as regards punctuation and the placing of capital letters". Thank you & continue to keep us Jamaicans connected & sharing our love & patriotism. Nuff respec' :-)

My wife and I thought the Jamaican anthem quite the best at the Olympics. Now we have found the words on Internet, how appropriate and stirring they are too!
