For Jamaica’s 50th: A Glimpse into the Jamaican Community in Atlanta

The community of Jamaicans was sparse when I moved to Atlanta in the early 1980's. So, for me, it could have been a lonely period of isolation separated from my own people for a while...a situation that was quite untenable. If I wanted to connect with my own Jamaican people in the metropolitan area, I knew exactly what I had to do, or so I thought: link up with a Jamaican organization.

Irwine Clare: A Man of the People, Born to Serve - Influential Jamaican in New York

       alt="Irwine Clare-2" border="0" align="left" hspace="15" />

On any given day, one can find Irwine Clare, Sr. in any of five different places. He is a multi-tasking community service machine that settles at nothing when it comes to helping others. I was privileged enough to spend a few hours on “his time,” observing the morning activities of the man whose picture you will see next to the term “master of all trades”. His office, located on Parsons Boulevard in Queens, NY, has a sign that reads “Caribbean Immigrant Services: Your one stop empowerment center.”

Among the many West Indian countries whose citizens emigrate each year, Jamaica is no exception. Most Jamaicans who leave the island and travel to Canada fine themselves settling in Montreal, Halifax or Toronto. The total number of Jamaicans in Canada has increased dramatically since the 1960’s and the reasons for coming are also different.
