Joe Higgs is an important figure in the history of Jamaican music...and not just because, as a mentor, he took the young Wailers under his wing. Not only did he guide them, in terms of learning to sing like professionals, he often sang with them live and out of necessity on some of their early recordings.
One half of Ska's Higgs and Wilson vocal duo, Joe sang about reality and helped pave the way for Roots Reggae. He filled in for Bunny Wailer on one of the Wailers' major tours and he released a series of excellent solo albums that showed his voice to be 100% exceptional.
