Duke Reid - 1 Minute Jamaican Music Biography
Published Jun 23, 2004
Arthur 'Duke' Reid was a pioneer in terms of the technical side
of music in Jamaica. His Trojan multi-set Sound System alongside
that of Tom the Great Sebastian's and Sir Coxone Dodd's Downbeat
pioneered the early days of Jamaica's fledgling industry. His
success through the 50s gave birth to his most excellent 'Treasure
Isle' recording studio and record label. 'The King of Sounds
and Blues', Duke was born back in 1915 and as a policeman became
a champion marksman. He was known for carrying guns and for seeing
to it that competing sound systems be put 'on the shelf' if they
posed too big a threat. The lasting memory of Duke Reid though
is the great music recorded atop his liquor store in the Treasure
Isle Studio.
