Ken Boothe - 1 Minute Jamaican Music Biography

Published Jun 23, 2004

Ken Boothe began his distinguished career by singing and looking for guidance from the Back-a-Wall crew in Kingston. Friday nights saw young hopefuls going at it in an informal competition. Ken cut his teeth...musically speaking... alongside people like Bob Marley, Slim Smith, Stanger Cole, Roy Shirley and the Melodians. Boothe began recording as half of a duo with Stranger Cole in the early Ska era and would really reach greater heights when Rock Steady took over the scene. His distinctive, soulful voice not only made Ken 'Mr. Rock Steady', he peaked, after Reggae arrived as the ruling style, when he reached # 1 in England with his superb classic cover of the Bread hit 'Everything I Own'. Even now, Ken Boothe remains one of the best.
