The Melodians - 1 Minute Jamaican Music Biography
Published Jun 23, 2004
The Melodians began to come into their own as a vocal phenominon
just between the Ska and Rock Steady phases of Jamaica's musical
development. That was the Rude Boy era. But it was with Rock
Steady and their association with Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label
that they really made their mark. Along with the Heptones, The
Paragons and the Techniques, the Melodians ruled their era. Both
Tony Brevett and Brent Dowe provided stirring lead vocals. When
they moved on to record with Mrs. Pottinger's label they remained
excellent. The Melodians enjoyed substantial success in Britain
too and their Reggae era mega-hit 'The Rivers of Babylon' remains
a true Jamaican anthem to this day.
