The Journey Of Champions Gives Suriname An Advantage For The Digicel Caribbean Championships

Published Aug 7, 2008

Emilio Limon, youngest player in the Suriname National team, speaks about the Digicel Kick Start Clinics, World Cup qualifiers and Digicel Caribbean Championships.

Thursday August 7 - Paramaribo, Suriname:  As the Digicel Caribbean Championships continues in Guyana for the Group B games, 19 year old Surinamese midfielder, Emilio Limon, prepares to make his team and country proud by using his newly honed international training techniques to defeat their western neighbours Guyana and the nature isle Dominica.

Limon, one of the eight chosen by John Barnes to train with Sunderland AFC in the UK in April, will for the first time play for his national team in the Digicel Championships. "I am very enthusiastic about playing in the Digicel Championships.  During the Kick start clinics everyone told me that it was preparation for DCC. So it became my dream to play in the Championships."

After the Digicel Kick start training in Sunderland this year, Emilio Limon was called to represent his country as part of the National team.  The youngest player by two years, Limon feels that his selection by John Barnes played a big part in the coaches' decision. "I think that my experiences in England gave me an advantage and the coaches were impressed with the good reports from Sunderland AFC.  I have used the training I received in England to enhance not only my skills, but also the team's."

Already proving to be a rising star, Limon in his first game as national player, gave the assist for the winning goals against Guyana when they met for the CONCACAF qualifiers for South Africa 2010 earlier this year.  Suriname went all the way from 145th to 87th in the July count of the FIFA/Coca-Cola world ranking. Their current position represents Suriname's highest-ever ranking and the first time they have cracked the top 100.

Suriname does not seem to fear their first challengers in the Digicel Championships but rather look at the matches against Guyana and Dominica as training sessions for the upcoming World Cup qualifying match against 2006 DCC Champions Haiti on Wednesday August 20 in Port Au Prince.  With the additions of midfielder Gary Sordjo and left-back Renaldo Lupson to the starting line up Suriname are sure to make an impression in the Digicel Championships as they have so far with the CONCACAF qualifiers for South Africa 2010.  Limon comments on the upcoming DCC matches in Guyana: "We have a great team. It means a lot to all of us to represent our country and we will do our best to make our people proud."

The Group B matches of the Digicel Caribbean Championships starts on Friday August 8 in Guyana with the home team playing Dominica.  Suriname plays Dominica on Saturday August 9 and Guyana and Suriname battle it out in the final match of the group on Sunday August 10.  For match pictures and further information visit www.digicelfootball.com
