GC Foster stands out in Inter-Collegiate track and field
Published Apr 13, 2013Following GC Foster College’s overall performance in the recently concluded Inter Collegiate track and field championship, all eyes are not set on the national championships and competing on the European circuit.
The men’s section was won by GC Foster College with top-class performances from Orrin Powell, who broke the javelin record with a throw of 69.99 metres. Raymond Brown was equal to the task in the shot put as he threw 19.45 metres to take that title. Other outstanding performances came from Webster Chung who took the steeplechase, while Andre Headley won the 1500 metres. The men’s team amassed 205 points and won ahead of UWI – 203; UTECH – 168.
In the women’s section, placing second overall, Anastacia Leroy was one of the most outstanding taking the 200 metres title in 23.58 seconds (-2.3m/s). Leroy was also a member of the record breaking medley team. Another double winner in the women’s section was Roxine Salmon who won the steeplechase and 3000 metres.
In an interview with Coach, Maurice Wilson, he said that the preparation this year benefitted from the hosting of the Australians for the camp in January. “The professionalism of the GCF athletes has stepped up a notch as they interacted with the Aussies.” He was happy with the overall performances and said that all of the athletes have been able to balance school work and competition well.
Wilson was also happy to report that the athletes have largely remained injury free. This he said is a “good look for the rest of the season.”
