The Jamaican High Commission in South Africa has finally arrived, and the Independence weekend was marked by quite a few celebrations to make our presence in South Africa felt.

Acting High Commissioner, Miss Joan Thomas, launched the celebrations with a rousing and enthusiastic call to establish links between Jamaica, South Africa and other African countries. Her call included the development of exchanges to foster the economic, cultural and social sharing.

The celebrations started with a church service in Soweto. It was followed by a Reception in Pretoria. Both events were attended by representatives from other missions and Jamaicans from all over, included Jamaican faire on the menu — a real treat.

A Ghanaian band “Akwaaba” went all out to learn some Jamaican tunes, and while the function was relatively sedate, a few people took to the dance floor to end the afternoon.

The following day a dinner was held in collaboration with the University of Johannesburg School of Tourism and Hospitality, and saw Executive Chef Dennis McIntosh of Walkerswood Caribbean foods from Jamaica, prepare a 3 course Jamaican meal, to introduce culinary gurus to Jamaican cuisine. He was flown in specifically for the celebrations.
