Nadine Sutherland Takes Manhattan/Caribbean Week-Main

“Big Tingz” were definitely in order last week as The Caribbean Tourism Development Company (CTDC) showcased the region’s unique flavor during its annual Caribbean Week expo in New York. In addition to sports exhibitions, a wedding, and samples of Caribbean cuisine, the weeks’ events included several appearances and performances from popular Jamaican entertainer Nadine Sutherland.

At the Caribbean Fair on Tuesday June 12, Nadine greeted fans and signed posters at the Jamaica Tourist Board’s tent for several hours. Later that night she performed her signature track “Action” as well as songs from her new hit album Call My Name. The enthusiastic audience showed Sutherland lots of love during her set, particularly when she sang her latest hit, “Big Tingz”, giving shout-outs to New Yorkers and all of the Caribbean islands. Nadine also performed at the Ministers’ luncheon and the 34th annual Governments of the Caribbean State Ball, held at New York City’s fabled Waldorf-Astoria.

In between official events, Sutherland and Eight76 Records’ VP Myshjua Archibald welcomed members of the press at the New York launch for Call My Name. On hand to express their support of the new album were rising stars Twin of Twins, Producer/Manager Henry K, attorney (and former “Apprentice” contestant) Muna Heaven, Hon. Aloun Ndombet Assamba (Minister of Tourism, Entertainment & Culture- Jamaica), Ms. Carrole AM Guntley, (Director General, Ministry of Tourism- Jamaica), Mr. David Shields (Jamaica Tourist Board - Deputy Director of Tourism - Marketing), and Ms. Gail Moaney (Ruder-Finn - Executive VP, Director of Travel & Economic Development). Nadine rounded out the week with interviews and a visit to Sirius Satellite Radio for an on-air chat with DJ Gringo before returning to Jamaica where she is preparing to resume taping of the hit television show Digicel’s Rising Stars.

Call My Name, her first full-length CD in almost a decade, continues to win praise from critics and fans. Musicologist Winston “Merritone” Blake has called it “Nadine’s best effort to date”. Other notable quotes:

"Don't call it a comeback. Nadine Sutherland's new album Call My Name demonstrates that one of Jamaica's greatest vocalists is still in top form." Rob Kenner- Editor At Large/VIBE Magazine

"Nadine's prodigious talent reaches its apex on her latest album, weaving a rich variety of styles and emotions into a modern milestone." Roger Steffens - The Beat magazine / Reggae historian

“(Call My Name) Full of versatility and charisma!” TK Smith - WVIP 93.5 FM/New York

“Elements of rhythm and blues, world music and dance inform her music but reggae is the root and she is as comfortable there as she seems to be in her own shoes… Call My Name presents a fully matured songstress who can be vulnerable (“Keep Me Safe”), motivated (“It’s My Day”), tender and tough.”
Chuck Foster - The Beat magazine columnist / author of Billboard Book of Reggae
