Scholarship opportunity for Jamaican 16 -18 year olds, 5th and 6th formers - Message from United for Jamaica

Published Feb 8, 2008

Hi folks!

If anyone happens to know of any bright and accomplished young people between 16 and 18 yrs of age who may be eligible for a United World College Scholarship please invite them to the website below to apply. The deadline is February 29, 2008. Information about the schools and the IB program are accessed through the website. They must be Jamaican citizens but do not have to reside in Jamaica.

Just to brief you on the organization: The United World Colleges movement began in 1962. Since then 11 colleges have been established all over the world in Wales, United States, Costa Rica, Singapore, Norway, India, Italy, Southern Africa, Venezuela, and Canada. The colleges offer a two-year curriculum in the International Baccalaureate Diploma. However, the main focus of the colleges is to bring together bright and talented young people from across the globe to study and live together with a view to learning about cultural differences and promoting international understanding. Usually there are about 200 students at each college representing over 70 countries. All students are offered some form of scholarship whether partial or whole. These scholarships are funded by generous donors who believe in the mission of the UWC movement.

Students are selected by National Committees in their various countries which are usually voluntary committees made up of past students. The Jamaica National Council consists of six members, all ex-students of various UWCs. We are usually granted between two and six scholarships each year. At the beginning of each year we administer a selections process culminating in a final interview of short-listed candidates from which the scholars are chosen for the coming academic year. The current selections period has already begun. If you know a young person within the prescribed age group who is an academic achiever with great social awareness and involvement, please invite them to our website to apply. Feel free to forward this email to relevant candidates.

Thanks!
