The first Digicel Cricket Coaching Clinic of 2009 may have unearthed a cricketing treasure for the West Indies as seven year old Aidan George's impressive batting technique had lead coach Keith Arthurton buzzing with excitement.

“His stance is very good and he moves his feet at the right times and with ease. I certainly would like to work with him in the future as I think he has the potential to develop into a very good player,” Arthurton said at the conclusion of the three day clinic which took place this past weekend on the islands of Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

“While he was batting, I heard someone in the crowd shout out that he looked like Sachin Tendulkar (the Indian master batsman) and I thought the same thing because of the way he bats, his stance and his attitude. You don’t really see that in kids who are that young but he has something special in him and the local coaches should work with him so that he can develop his cricket skills,” Arthurton said of the youngster who lives in Hannah Estate in Tortola but is originally from Dominica.

When batting the confident youngster has an uncanny resemblance to the Indian batsman and also looks much older than his age.

While Aidan – the youngest participant in the Clinic – took most of the kudos from coach Arthurton, the prizes went to four other players. Brothers Romel and Ruel Chester – originally from Guyana – emerged as the best batsman and best bowler respectively.

The Chester siblings – Romel, 13 and Ruel, 11 - were selected by coach Arthurton for their outstanding performances, enthusiasm and keen interest in improving their cricket skills throughout the Digicel Cricket Clinic which also benefitted from coaching by Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Denesh Ramdin.

Joshua Hayles copped the best wicketkeeper prize and eight year old Jerome Pereira Jr was awarded best fielder.

The four winners took home one autographed mini bat each. The mini bat was autographed by Gayle, Sarwan and Ramdin.

The Digicel Cricket Clinics concluded with a 20 over match at the H Lavity Stoutt Community College ground. Dozens of parents and onlookers gathered to support the 26 Under 15 players who participated in the Clinics. The players were selected by the British Virgin Islands Cricket Association.

Each player was presented with a certificate of participation and an autographed photograph.
