After receiving rave reviews from the critics in Los Angeles, Jamaica Farewell, a play written and performed by Debra Ehrhardt will open in Atlanta at the Academy Theatre in Avondale Estates on April 19th, 2007 and run for three weeks. “It’s a play that will make you laugh and cry,” said one LA critic who described Debra’s performance as a”Tour de force... an unforgettable journey, crafted with wit and empathy.”
Jamaica farewell is a one woman play based on the Debra’s true story of her life growing up in Jamaica and her subsequent journey to the United States during a time of political upheaval in Jamaica. It is directed by Monique Lai who is also a Jamaican.
The late Perry Henzell who directed Jamaica’s first feature film, “The Harder They Come, wrote that the play was “a brilliant evening’s entertainment… some serious talent involved here.” The director of “Clear and Present Danger,” Phillip Noyce said, “enthused with madcap humor and deep emotions of the Jamaican spirit, this riveting tale reminds us of the power of personal storytelling.”
With reviews such as these Jamaicans in Atlanta are eagerly awaiting the play’s arrival. Performances are at 8:00 pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays with a matinee performance at 3:00 on Sundays.
