Jamaican Art on a cultural mission in South Florida - Novermber 9 - 10th, 2007, Miami

Published Nov 6, 2007

A large selection of Jamaican art will be displayed in Miami this weekend when some 35 artists exhibit more than 100 pieces at the Out of the Blue Café in the Wynwood Art District in downtown Miami.

The two day exhibition begins on Friday (Nov. 9) and runs through Saturday (Nov. 10), simultaneously running with the Miami International Book Festival.

The items on display will also be on sale. Part proceeds from the sale will benefit victims of Hurricane Dean which damaged the southern end of Jamaica during its path across the Caribbean earlier this year.

While some of the artists are making a first appearance in overseas exhibitions, some continue to gain international exposure like Judy MacMillan and Kacey Ferguson. Recently both were part of a month-long feature during October at the Dharma Studio in Coconut Grove, a tribute to former Jamaican artist, Colin Garland who died earlier this year.

Other well-known artists -local and international – are among those showcasing creative expressions, at the event organized by Island Art and Framing in Jamaica, as well as Florida based art connoisseurs, here in South Florida, Ms. Joanne Jacobson and Ms. Deborah Abrahams.

The exhibition and sale will feature a diverse selection of themes using a variety of media including textiles and canvasses, wood carvings, paintings, recycled glass and metals, and photographs and sculptures.

According to coordinator, Ms. Joanne Jacobson, this is another tremendous opportunity to promote Jamaican art and culture, as the creative variation showcases itself in all art forms.

Described as visionary, she continued that the group of artists, each has a unique way of making and presenting their work, which collectively demonstrate aspects of the island’s rich culture and heritage.
