Local civic group The United Black Men of Queens (UBMQ) hosts their annual Awards Dinner Dance on Friday, October 16th to benefit their Scholarship and Mentoring Programs.  The 34th Anniversary and Scholarship Awards Gala will honor “The Doctors in Our Community” at 7:30PM at Antun’s, 96-42 Springfield Blvd, Queens Village, NY.  To purchase tickets, call Donald Vernon at 718-206-2411.  Contribution is $100 per person. 

“The United Black Men of Queens Mentoring Program is near and dear to my heart,” stated UBMQ Director, Donald P. Vernon, Esq.  “Each year, UBMQ members rally around at-risk youth to promote their social and economic welfare by giving them positive role-models.  These young men find that UBMQ members come from the same communities, the same schools and the same types of families that they do, and they learn to aspire to more than they could have ever imagined. 

Vernon continues, “The proceeds of the UBMQ 34th Anniversary Dinner Dance help to sustain our necessary and worthwhile Mentoring Program.  It is my hope that everyone who can will support UBMQ by purchasing a ticket and joining me at my table on October 16th for a fun-filled night of dining and dancing.

The 2009 event theme is Increasing our Wealth by Maintaining Our Health honoring “Doctors in Our Community,” including Louis J. Auguste, MD, Sharon Deans, MD, Daniel Laroche, MD and James Satterfield, MD for their contributions.

Founded in 1974, United Black Men of Queens County, Inc. is group of professional and civic minded men who serve residents in the borough of Queens, with a special interest in promoting the welfare of at-risk black high school-age youth through its Mentoring Program.  Active members include Lawrence J. Comier, J. W. Vincent Cordice, Jr. MD, New York City Council Member Leroy G. Comrie, Rev. Dr. Charles L. Norris, Sr., New York State Assemblyman William Scarborough, New York City Police Detective Raymond D. Raymos, Congressman Gregory W. Meeks and Richard J. Gibbs.
