Published Sep 10, 2009

Jamaican nationals in the Houston area and surrounding environs will benefit from a two-day Community Outreach program beginning next Thursday (Sept. 18) at the First Methodist Houston Church located at 19578 Westpark Drive in Houston.

A team of resource persons from the Consulate General of Jamaica in Miami will partner with several Jamaican agencies to provide nationals with pertinent information and relevant services covering consular services, processing of Jamaican passports and citizenship applications, land titles and property valuations, estate management and probate information in Jamaica and vital records, processing information including birth, marriage and death certificates.

The sessions will begin on Friday (Sept 18) at 3:30 p.m. through 9:30 p.m., and will continue on Saturday (Sept. 19) at 8:00 a.m. through 12 noon.

During Friday’s session, Jamaica’s Consul General, Mrs. Sandra Grant Griffiths will host a community town hall meeting beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the same venue.

Participating agencies will include the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA), Registrar G the National Land Agency (NLA), the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB),), National Housing Trust (NHT), and the JN Representative Office (USA) along with the Grace Kennedy Remittance Services/Western Union (GKRS/WU).

The two-day session will be beneficial to more than 50,000 Jamaican nationals in wider Houston community and continues the series of Community Outreach programs initiated by the Consul General to take the services of the Mission on the road, in an effort to improve cooperation and creating accessibility in meeting the needs of the Jamaican Diaspora.

Outreach activities have already benefitted nationals in other cities across the Southern USA program which began last October.  These include Atlanta, Georgia; and Orlando, West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale in Florida.
