This week the government launched a special crime prevention program in Spanish Town, in response to several violent incidents since the beginning of this year.
CHINA LOANS US$21M TO PORT AUTHORITY - July 24, 2004
This week the government approved a US$21 million (J$1.3 billion) loan agreement between the Port Authority of Jamaica and the Export-Import Bank of China. The loan will be used in the purchasing of modern equipment and upgrading the port facilities.
MORE THAN 550 WOMEN RAPED SINCE JANUARY - JULY 25, 2004
The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) reported this week that since the start of 2004 more than 500 women were raped in Jamaica. In 2003 there were 931 reported rape cases in Jamaica.
PRIME MINISTER: SAY NO TO TAINTED MONEY - JULY 25, 2004
P.J. Patterson, president of the People's National Party and Prime Minister of Jamaica, yesterday warned the candidates seeking to succeed him against accepting tainted money or donations from anonymous persons to fund their campaigns.
COOKE SAYS JAMAICANS MUST RETURN TO THE CHURCH - JULY 27, 2004
Governor-General Sir Howard Cooke speaking at the Kiwanis Club of Ocho Rios annual prayer breakfast called on Jamaicans to develop a fresh new vision and to seek the guidance of the Church. He stated that the church should continue to play an important guiding role in the society.
CCJ BILL PASSED - JULY 28, 2004
This week the House of Representatives passed all of three Bills related to the establishment of the controversial Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), leaving only a Privy Council ruling later this year before the Government can historically abolish the Jamaican right of appeal to the United Kingdom-based body.

POLLS - SEAGA'S EXIT MAY HELP JLP IN NEXT ELECTION/GOLDING FAVORED AS NEXT LEADER – JULY 30
The results of a recent poll by Don Anderson, on behalf of the Gleaner, show that 60% of Jamaicans (based on the sample tested) believes that the stepping down of Edward Seaga as JLP president in November will give the party a better chance of winning the next general elections. In another related survey 42% favored, Chairman Mr. Bruce Golding as the party’s next leader. The next closet to Mr. Golding was Pearnel Charles who had 16.3%.

BOLT TO COMPETE IN THE OLYMPICS GAMES.
Usain Bolt, the World Junior 200 meters record holder has been cleared to represent Jamaica at this month's Athens Olympics in Greece. The Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) performed exhaustive medical testing to assure that his recent hamstring injury was fully healed.
POWELL BEATS GREENE IN 100M
Jamaica's national champion Asafa Powell won the men's 100m final in 9.91 seconds ahead of second placed U.S. sprinter Maurice Greene at the London Grand Prix international athletics meeting at Crystal Palace last week.
JAMAICA IN FINAL
The Jamaican Cricket team beat Trinidad and Tobago TCL Group West Indies one-day series to reach the finals where they will play Barbados. The match is scheduled for August 1st.
INJURY FORCES FENTON TO WITHDRAW FROM THE OLYMPIC TEAM
It was revealed this week that top female 400 meters runner, Lorraine Fenton, has withdrawn from the national team to this month's Athens Olympics in Greece due to injury.
