MISSING DUTCH WOMAN FOUND IN JAMAICA – 8/7/2004

Sandy Maria Peter, a 25-year-old Dutch woman, who was reported missing in Holland a year ago, has been found in Jamaica. She was arrested in Kingston for overstaying her visa as she tried to board a foreign vessel. She had been ordered deported.

 

GANG LEADER’S FUNERAL CAUSE EARLY BUSINESS CLOSURES IN SPANISH TOWN – 8/10/2004

The Spanish Town Business community shut down there business on Monday as shoppers stayed away due to the funeral service for former 'One Order' gang leader, Oliver 'Bubba' Smith, who was shot and killed in St. Andrew.

 

JCF HOST YOUTHS TRAINING CAMP – 8/10/04

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF Community Relations Division hosted more than 300 youths from communities across the island at their special empowerment and development training camp in Vernamfield, Clarendon.

 

HURRICANE CHARLEY BRUSHES PAST JAMAICA’S SOUTHERN COAST - 08/12/04

Jamaica was spared the full force of Hurricane Charley as the extended winds brushed the southern coast of the island. The 2 major airports on the island were closed and disrupted commercial flights in and out of the country. One man was swept away and died as he tried to rescue his family from rising waters. St Elizabeth had the most extensive damage. The damage to the island is estimated at $100 (J) Million.

 

POLICE BUST ILLEGAL GUN-REPAIR SHOP – 8/12/04

An illegal mini-gun repair shop in Portmore, St. Catherine, was busted this week by the police. They believe home-made guns were being manufactured there. Several guns and 18 rounds of ammunition were seized.

MULLINGS OUT OF OLYMPICS - 8/16/04

Following a positive drug test and a hearing postponed due to hurricane Charley national 200 meters champion Steve Mullings will not be competing in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

 

NIGELLA SAUNDERS LOSES FIRST-ROUND MATCH - ATHENS 2004 OLYMPIC GAMES – 8/15/04

Nigella Saunders, Jamaica’s top female badminton player was defeated 11-4, 11-1 by fourth seeded Mia Audina of the Netherlands at the Goudi Olympic Badminton Centre in Athens.

 

JAMAICA UNDER-19 CRICKET TEAM MOVE INTO SEMIS 8/14/04

A draw with the Windward Islands allowed the Jamaican team to advance to the semi-finals of the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Youth league championship.

 

SANDIE RICHARDS CARRY JAMAICA FLAG AT OLYMPICS – 08/13/204

Sandie Richards, the veteran Olympian 400 meters specialist, carried the Jamaican national flag at the Olympics opening ceremonies.

 

JAMAICA'S SUNSHINE GIRLZ WINS CROWN 08/07/04

Jamaica's Sunshine Girlz beat Barbados 56-33 to win the Caribbean Netball Championship in Trinidad and Tobago. The team is ranked third by the International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA).
