View Full Version : Mo & Likkle MoFire do China - Beijing to Hong Kong!!

08-31-2008, 03:59 PM
Well folks... here it is!! I am going to get started TODAY!! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/breakdance.gif
I thank all of you who have been asking to see pictures of our wonderful summer adventure! It has been really hard to narrow things down, and figure out exactly how I could possible write a full report of such a BIG and all over the road trip.

I will add narritive here and there, but other than that, I think I will just post pictures so it is not too long and drawn out!!

Suffice it to say, we had an AMAZING journey together. We flew into Beijing just before the Olympics started, and out of Hong Kong after the Olympics had started.

We took a map, a guidebook, one backpack and a keen sense of adventure! That's it. Whatever was going to happen was going to happen.

There were tricky spots, and real treasure spots. There was a REAL challenge with not knowing any of the language or dialects, but at the same time, that allowed us to communicate without words, and this, I have come to feel out of all of our travel is often the most meaningful communication.

I am proud of us for doing this trip together. Likkle Mo was a champion in every sense of the word. Her endurance, her ability to "try" lots of different foods and places without complaint or hesitation. Her feeling of trust and confidence in me.... this was REALLY special time for us together.

Anyway, I'll post a few at a time if I am able. But mostly tonight as I have to go to a family dinner shortly.

I could go on and on and on... so many pictures, so many perspectives, but we will leave the Great Wall for now... after 6 and a half hours on the Wall at a mere 56 degrees with the humidity and 12 bottles of water consumed, it was time to make the great walk back...

08-31-2008, 11:00 PM
Did I say how much I love this forum! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/bannana_purple.gif ((Mo'S)))

Your daughter is very pretty mo http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/whistle.gif
When did you go?

08-31-2008, 11:18 PM
After our big trek on the Great Wall, and long drive back (we drove about 2 hours each way to the Mutianyu section, not the touristy Badaling section just north of Beijing) we needed to eat some food, http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/hungry.gifso we went down to the infamous Beijing Night Food Market....

And then we weren't hungry anymore!!!

08-31-2008, 11:25 PM
Rootsie, thank you http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/wavey.gif
We left July 12th and got back August 10th... had to be back for Likkle Mo's 8th birthday!! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/birthday.gif

I love this photo. Beautiful so far. I can't wait for you to narrow it down. You don't have to narrow it too much. More Please!

Peace and Blessings

Thanks Sugar... http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/70409-waytogo.gif
The look out towers every mile were a shady haven for us in the heat, and Likkle Mo would climb up on a sill and tak in the mountain breeze... I found the window cutouts to be wonderful frames too!! I love that one of her in the window - she didn't know I was shooting a photo of her which is probably why I like it best!

I am not going to bore you all with a million pictures of Olympic sites as I am sure you have all seen them a TON in the last few weeks!!

But here is just one to document that we made it into the area as the final preparations were taking place. Security was VERY tight!

**Note the smog http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/sick.gif... I know now first hand why so many atheletes were concerned for their health while attending and competing in the Olympics.... Maybe Bolt was trying to out run the smog and get the heck out of the staduim??? http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/grin.gif

beautiful pics! the food kinda turned my stomach tho http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/sick.gif but lil mo seemed o be having fun http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/70409-waytogo.gif

Next we have a series of shots from the Summer Palace... this is where all of the little Emperors and Empresses were confined throughout the different early dynasties. As well as the Concubines and 10,000 workers to make sure ALL the royalty were taken care of. Only the Chairman could come and go. The wives, children, workers, and concubines all stayed there, confined and on alert.
I must admit, if I had to be stuck somewhere, this was a pretty beautiful place.

The whole place was connected by ornate covered paths so no one ever had to get wet if it rained

This is the huge manmade lake that they modelled after the lake in Hangzhuo (south of Shanghai)... if you see the original, you will see that the chairman loved it so much that he had it almost entirely copied for the Summer Palace.. the same docks, the same shape, the same bridges - a carbon copy!

Finding our way around the grounds - very lush and pretty, but lots of mosquitos!!

The temple within the Summer Palace

A boat made entirely of MARBLE - needless to say, it is a decoration, not a working boat! HUGE!

09-01-2008, 11:10 AM
The next shots are of the various areas of the Temple of Heaven... A deeply spiritual place that brings many to daily in hopes to make it to heaven at then end of life...

These are some of the Burning Urns for offerings at high holidays:

This is the "Echo Wall" a very loud, but interesting place. It surrounds one of the temples and the purpose is to go and shout your desires and wishes into the wall and they echo back to you and lodge deep into your core. The chinese are all about good fortune and making your own destiny. Needless to say, Likkle Mo had a few things to yell into the wall. I now know that her love and desires are "LOVE - PEACE - FAMILY" She yelled that over and over and over almost a trance for close to 5 minutes... she definitely "felt" something there.

First glimpse of the actual Temple of Heaven which is at the far south end of the grounds

A closer look at the rooftop... I couldn't fit the whole temple in one shot... it is HUGE!(and very tall)

Four days in and around Beijing was enough for us... it was too nutty with all of the Olympic shenanigans and scary security...

I got us overnight train tickets to Xian to go see the Terracotta Warriors... it was an experience I'll never forget -the train that is!! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/eek2.gif I have a new appreciation for what cattle go through in their lifetime, and it was just scary enough trying to get Likkle Mo and myself on that train without getting trampled to death, that for the remainder of our journey, we flew between cities... NO MORE TRAINS IN CHINA!! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/dizzy.gif

Thanks goodness I sprung for a private berth, and once we got on the train and to our cabin we were fine for the next 16 hours... but getting on - all I can say is holey moley - I am very appreciative for where and how I live here in Canada!! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/70384-praying.gif

09-01-2008, 11:40 AM
There was not much else in Xian that I desired to see after arriving there. I found it to be a very dirty and unkempt old city. It was full of filth and didn't "feel" that safe to me. So we checked into our filthy, gross accomodation and decided to get to find a place to get a plane ticket for the next morning, and then we found the #306 bus (thank you Roughguide China guidebook), travelled about an hour and a bit to the site...
The 4 excavation sites are all still being worked, and it is simply amazing how they have unearthed these warriors, mostly broken into many pieces and are working to put them all back together... it is very dark to preserve the materials, but hopefully you get the gist of the army that is still being unearthed...
and just for some perspective, the horses are all life sized or maybe even a little bigger, and each "warrior" stands between 6 - 8 feet tall. And it is true what you read about them - each one is different entirely - there was no mould to make these things... they all have a different face, body, clothes, boots, etc.

Just amazing!!

Later we will take you to Chengdu - which despite the earthquake, and the fact that we were there on an plane waiting for take off for another 6.0 "tremmor" ended up being our favorite place in China!!

But for now, I have to go to the park with Likkle Mo and get some fresh air and sunshine!! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/dance01.gif

The journey to the warriors was hell on wheels Magic!! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/sick.gif
When we did get to Xian, everything dat could go wrong did... the hostel we did book online when we were in Beijing was "closed down" when we did reach after our 16 hour overnight train.... we walked about trying to find another accomodation.. by 11 a.m we found one 3 star which looked okay from the outside, but....
By this time me and likkle mo were looking for a travel agency to book flights out the next day - the city was disgusting!! We walked over piles after pile of vomit, and it was smoky and smoggy and awful!! You know me magic, I don't expect much, and I have travelled enough off the beaten path places to grin and bear a lot - likkle Mo too! But we decided to book overpriced flight to get out EARLY the next morning, and then we took local transit (read: old diesel stinky bus #306) about an hour and a half to the "site"... it IS in the country, after passing 2 sets of the biggest, smoggiest, nuclear power plants I have ever seen in my life!! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/eek2.gif http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/eek2.gif http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/eek2.gif
The 4 "exhibition halls" are nothing more than big tin covered, open air, not well lit buildings, almost like a tin tent of sorts, but HUGE! I think it was to save the integrity of the excavation.

On the bus back to the city, we dubbed the bus the "barf bus" http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/sick.gif You kiterally had to sit with your feet up on the seats - it really was gross! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/sick.gif

I have heard raves about this site, but I suppose those reviews are from people who take all inclusive tours, and don't stay in crappy hotels and travel with the local transit.

It was awesome to see - it really was, but if I were to recommend it, I probably wouldn't if you are squamish - the same could be said for the whole city and area.

It was the LEAST favorite part of our journey... we got out of Dodge ASAP! That being said, I can cross it off the list now!! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

09-04-2008, 03:14 PM
Place sound dutty fi real. And knowing the general hygine habbits in China I can imagine what you mean.

But like you said, it's on that list and need to cross out one day.

09-04-2008, 04:17 PM
It's off the list... and if anyone really wants to see it - National Geographic has made a good documentary... it'll save you some time and hand sanitizer!! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/70409-waytogo.gif

09-04-2008, 04:28 PM

ever so glad I get to take the tour with you in Cyber Space ~

Likkle Mo http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/inlove1.gif

Such a lucky young girl, you deserve all the respect in the world for how you have raised her with an open mind to the world. http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/70409-waytogo.gif

09-05-2008, 08:29 PM
Thanks BanDanna... http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/blushing2.gif
I am lucky too!! It really is magic to see the world and it's beautiful people through Likkle Mo's un-jaded, media-untouched eyes! http://www.jamaicans.com/forums/images/smilies/notworthy.gif
I really am the lucky one to have a kid that thrives on learning about different people and different cultures in different places... she has such an open mind and an incredible open heart! I think we could all take a little lesson from that couldn't we?? She is like a likkle magnet.. people flock to her and I may as well be invisible!! But I am okay with that because we are all put on this earth for different reasons - perhaps this is hers, and I am merely the one who finances her missions!!
