Sandals Dunnís River to close

Sandals Resorts International is to stop operating the 256-room Sandals Dunnís River Hotel in Mammee Bay, St Ann in another six months.

Sagicor Pooled Investment Fund Limited, which owns the property, says the lease now being enjoyed by Sandals will not be renewed when it expires on May 31 next year.

In a statement Sagicor said itís inviting select parties to consider the opportunity to operate the property.

Under the current agreement originating on June 1, 1999, the hotel was leased for 11 years to Mammee Bay Hotel Limited.

There was also an option to renew the lease for two successive five year terms.

This afternoon Rachel McLarty, the director of corporate communications at Sandals, declined to comment on the development.

She would only say Sandals would respond to our enquiries at the appropriate time.

The closure of Sandals Dunnís River would mean that the number of hotels under the Sandals and Beaches brands would fall to nine.

Itís also likely that there would be implications for the 250 workers at the Mammee Bay-based hotel.

The announcement comes amid the global economic downturn, which has affected tourist travel worldwide.

Although Jamaica has managed to maintain relatively high tourist arrival figures, earnings are down considerably, because hotels have been forced to heavily discount room prices to attract visitors.
