Legislation for casino gaming signed into law
Thursday, 29 April 2010
The Bill to legislate casino gaming in Jamaica has been signed into law by Governor General Sir Patrick Allen.

This follows its passage in both houses of Parliament last month.

As a result, the way is now clear for the establishment of the Casino Gaming Commission and the crafting and implementation of appropriate regulations.

State Minister in the Ministry of Finance Senator Arthur Williams says this will be done shortly.

However, he says great care has to be taken in ensuring that the regulations comprehensively address the details governing the roll-out of casino gaming in Jamaica.

Senator Williams says the major challenge is to ensure that casinos are operated according to the strict rules that are set out.

He noted that the experience in other countries shows that regulations for the operation of casinos can run into hundreds of pages.

With respect to the appointment of a Commissioner and members of the Casino Gaming Commission, Senator Williams says this will be done as soon as the proper notice is given by Finance Minister Audley Shaw.
