View Full Version : Fell in Love with NYC

03-16-2007, 01:25 PM
This was our first visit to NYC and I have to say I'm in love...the city and the people took my breathe away!

NYC Party shuttle (outstanding group of people.....saw more than I could have dreamed)
Rachel Farrell at the Blue Note
Cab Pedal through Central Park (just lovely)
Conan O'Brien Show
Dinner Jamaican Flavors
Apollo Theater Tour
Chicken n Waffles at Amy Ruth
Color Purple
Dinner Chez Josephine
Exploring Harlem
Crab cakes at the Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station
Patties from Golden Crust
Public Transit....never used one taxi even to and from the airport!

Our first night on our way to Brooklyn via subway we got separated at a stop I think it was Jay Street anyway we were confused because the train we were suppose to take wasn't working and the F train was doing the stops instead....this seem to have a lot of people confused so hubby got off and when I tried to exit the doors closed before I could exit.....so I went to the next stop (I think Hoyt) realized all I had on me was a metro card...no cell phone....no money.......no room key.......but thanks to a bunch of NY finest we reconnected at the next stop.
We were on our way to Brooklyn to walk back across the bridge...but that never happened. That evening and the next morning all I could think was this place is too crowded, this place is too busy, I just can't handle NYC. But this incident became a distant memory and I truly fell in love with the city and all that she has to offer.

Lovely photos Sammy - although I live here it's nice seeing the City from a different angle.

03-16-2007, 05:20 PM
I see there are quite a few pics of you and your honey. Did you have any difficulty finding someone to take a photo for you?
Sammy - this pic so nice. You and “Mr. Sammy” so cute together!

03-16-2007, 05:48 PM
thanks nattydreadgirl!

03-16-2007, 06:17 PM
Wow - your pictures are wonderful! I was a first-timer to NYC last year ... had been told for years by many "friends" who were NYers that I would HATE it...and I had such a good time that I went back twice in 6 months. I am also still hunting down my college roomie who assured me that I'd be such a mark I'd likely be mugged at the airport... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif

Unlike you, I wasn't smart enough to take photos. Oh yeah, I had my camera with me almost all the time, but I was just so spellbound by the sights, smells, sounds, etc. that I kept forgetting to take pictures. On all 3 trips. Now you make me feel like I have to get some this summer when I return.

Thanks again Sammy - you have really brightened my day. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70409-waytogo.gif

03-16-2007, 10:15 PM
Really nice! I love this one, I can see you taking the picture /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

03-17-2007, 05:13 PM
Jesus, guess I should go back to NYC to visit. Your photos look so nice, Especially the Jamaican food. boy, I don't know why the Jamaican cooking in MD and DC is so awful /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

By the way, you have a cute face -- cute cheeks!

03-17-2007, 08:03 PM
It's been quite a while since I've been to NYC and I figured it would take something dramatic to get me there (too crowded and it doesn't 'grab' me), but after seeing your pics, I'm thinking its not so bad after all. Great pics and thanks for sharing /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70409-waytogo.gif

03-18-2007, 11:19 AM
Visiting NY is great, but living there is the absolute worst.

Also, it really is NOT a safe city. I couldn't wait to get away and now I have to go back on business next month so I am flying in on the last flight and jetting out exactly the moment my meeting is over.

There are very cool places to visit but those that live there have to face pressures like economic pressures, the filth, homelessness, mounting costs for everything while service is lacking. Riding a subway is cool because you are experiencing it for the first time, now picture being stuck in a hot car on a 90 degree day, packed like sardines and a homeless man who hasn't bathed for the length of time he's been homeless is rubbing against you and chooses to releive himself righ there.

I have seen women assaulted by perverts who grabbed their private parts then run as the train door opens.

There is nos ecurity on the trains. Two girls were trying to stab each other once and the conductor told us he has a schedule to cover.

You have no protection in NYC from anything unlessyou live in certain area codes. Try calling those idiot cops in NY, they should all be demoted and paid 25 bucks an hour, especially the precinct on Laconia avenue in teh Bronx. They will shoot an unarmed black man in a minute but let a woman call them, they will show up 30 minutes later adn ahve an attitude.

Oh then if you are lucky to own a home, you have to pay an arm and a leg and taxes keep going up so you take a second job to pay for it right????? Wrong, while you are away the animals will throw garbage infront of you yard and a sanitation officer will come and give you tickets when you are at work. Don't fight it though because the judge will conclude that even though you are at work you are still responsible. How much is the ticket $300.

OH and trust me the rats are not confined to the KFC restaurant, they are EVERYWHERE. They run all over the subway system and are as big and fat as cats.

Service delays, you would think that you would receive adequate info about subway delays and reroutes right. Yeah keep dreaming.

Many tourists are robbed and beaten, you were just lucky. A few months before I came here a homeless man hacked away at a tourist in Columbus avenue (one of the pictures I see above) and left him in the hospital th enext day.

Then a mental patient killed Kendra Webdale. A bronx man coming from work lost his feet due to being pushed over by a guy unprovoked the man just disappeared into the night.

Sandi F,

thanks for stopping by!

Sammy, thanks for sharing your pics. New York is one of my most favourite places to visit in the US. Oh, it must be a short visit as well as I do love to sleep at nights. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/704555_dwl.gif

03-19-2007, 12:28 AM
((sammy))) thanks for sharing.. nice to see it from an outsiders perspective.. i dont live in the city... 50 minutes north. but im there all the time.... it truly is a great city

mariek.. a bit over the top i'd say...... i thought you were describing kingston at first...

.. im glad you loved it sammy.. its an awesome city.. with high energy... a beat like no other... diversity in peoples and culture.... so much to eat.. see and do... you did a tremendous amt unbelievable....... more than me .. lol..

Sammy, thanks for sharing your adventure in the City. I've only been a couple of times and walked the entire city with a friend who lives off Broadway on 92nd Street. Lawd my feet were on fire!!! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70394-bawlout.gif

My favorite part of one trip was going to a street fair on Broadway up around 121st st. And of course H&H bagels & Zabars. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70371-jump.gif

BTW, Mista Sammy is a pleasure to look at as well. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70365-flirt.gif

03-19-2007, 12:36 PM
BND - lol no but it sure felt like Kingston. I woke up one mornign at 2:00 to a barage of gunshots and a guy lay dead right infront of my yard. They police didn't even clean up the blood and the children had to walk through it to school unitl the rain came a week later and washed it away. AT least in Kingston dem will wash weh di blood.

Living in the 'bubs is different and you only see one side of the city, there is another side that is just downright disgusting.

I am going there next month and I booked the last flight in and the first available flight out. I have not exaggerated anything I have said, I have only spoken freely.

Dayum, I never realised how much I HATE that place and the mice, oh how they scare me. I mean seriously, can't we put down baits.

03-19-2007, 08:30 PM
Wow Sammy, great report and great pictures!!!

Glad you posted in Jamaicaholics otherwise I wouldn't even had thought to come down and see what was new.

So who had the best view of the city... Top of the Rock or Empire State Building??

03-20-2007, 09:29 AM
mariek.. would have been nice to let sammy have her thread without your dramatizations of the worst you have seen in nyc...

i am not a complete suburbanite.. i have spent years in nyc.. from birth.. and ive seen quite a bit.... there is the bowels to any city.. all over the world... you have done like what newscasters to.. spin the worst.. ...

i dont care where you live...... or lived.. it is not common fare to see a gunshot body and blood in the street for weeks.... that's just nonsense... and im sorry you hate it so much.. and your experience was horrendous.. it's a city.. i love it.. but it's home.. but i do not have rose colored eyes so much so to not see its woes..... your description is just not an accurate one.. its an extreme.. and to compare it to kingston is ludicrous... esp when it comes to sanitation...... neither is terrific..... but kingston is no shining star.. and i LOVE kingston tooo.... very much...

sammy.. sorry for the double derail... just irks me to see your positive thread.. be torn with such negativity.. in such a dramatic and unrealistic way..... it is a great city with much to offer.. not for everyone.. esp non city folks.. it can be overwhelming... even i take it in doses.. .. do my thing and leave............

enjoyed your take.. love a newcomers feels...

03-20-2007, 10:09 AM

Speaking of sore feet....boy did my feet HURT and bad! It's amazing when asking for directions someone would say "oh it's only a few blocks you can walk it" only to find out it was a mile away /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70361-embarassed.gif...one thing is for sure they have got to be the most in shape group of people! Thanks for the compliments of my mister /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70365-flirt.gif

SendnULuv, Thanks for stopping by....I enjoyed the overall experience of TOTR ...customer service at ESB is lacking

You know I have heard worse stories of Jamaica and love it to my soul.....so others opinions are just that....I listen then judge for myself....so far I LOVE NYC and plan to return later this year.

03-20-2007, 11:32 AM
BND no disrespect here but unless there is a warning on the board which prohibits one person from posting about their experience in a certain place then I am free to say TRUTHFULLY what my experience is.

If I started a new post would that make you feel better? The truth is I have experienced filth, rodents, murders, high cost of living, racism and have witnessed robberies, and incompetent police protection. Don't get so up in arms about NYC no one owns it.

Many people go to Jamaica and talk about the negatives they have seen, I guess they should just keep their mouth shut.

03-20-2007, 11:58 AM
oh Gezzus Mary & Joseph ....

Sammy .... So glad you loved it ... I am certain I would love it as well. Nina - always a pleasure to see your photo sharing ... your love for the city always shines thru as well.

I will have to use your notes as a guide if I ever make it there ... and make sure I leave with dead feet!!

Marie ... happy you live elsewhere now ~

mr sammy and i really did enjoy the city...he said he hasn't seen me smile that much outside of jamaica ever.

we didn't actually attend amateur night but during our tour the guide put on a mock show and it was too funny....we toured with a group of middle school kids....so they put on a show...and mr sammy did well too

i think my fav was the ride through central park....also enjoyed rachel farrell but her performance could have been anywhere....but the central park experience could have only been in NYC.......it was magical!

Jah mamma.....all it takes is one click of your mouse and your plane ticket can be purchased....oh and a CC of course...glad you enjoyed the ride /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Marie why did you stay there so long if it is so bad. Glad you got out

03-20-2007, 05:58 PM
Nice report Sammy, I was in NYC two weeks ago to visit a friend of mine, got some cheap tickets to see the Producers from playbill.com then went to the lower east side to see another friend play in a band at the living room, eventually turned in after 3am, after getting a pastrami sandwich at Katz, only in NYC and I felt very safe, but I can only take that city in doses. Give me California anyday. Looked like you had fun /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70409-waytogo.gif

Personally I have no problem with your observations of NYC. IMO, trip reports often show the "good side" of things but everywhere has the good, the bad, and the ugly. Sometimes trip reports can interest a person to go visit that place, but if there are things a visitor should know, then it is not a negative for that to be stated. It really doesn't take away from the experience(s) of the person doing the report.

Hopefully we can all put this to rest and enjoy Sammy's experience /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70409-waytogo.gif

"Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one"

It's neat seein' the City thru a visitor's eye...I'll walk by most of these sights without even looking! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

sorry you missed my point.. no one owns any place. nor have i ever been for censoring of views... or feel one shouldnt speak their peace.. just feel you came in with too much intense negativity in a positive thread.. and i feel you were a bit ghoulish....

dont know of any city in any part of the world that hasn't experienced high cost of living. racism, robberies.. incompetency, filth, rodents.. yada yada... thats not the first things one would think of with NYC.. and i will still say you used unwashed bloodspills in the street much like a scare tactic.. think it was a low blow.. we agree to disagree....

heck i go to kingston all the time... and while ill talk of the good and bad in jamaica.... i do not go on this board and tear kingston apart.. nor try to scare others away.. and create hysteria.. its irresponsible.... and believe me there is a lot more to be concerned with in kingston by a landslide....

amen to this.. agree to disagree.. its SAMMMMYS thread.. not ours..... wish you hadnt derailed... and im sorry i took the bait.. just hit a nerve

03-20-2007, 08:51 PM

Sammy, is there a significance to that stump (can't think of what else to call it)?

03-20-2007, 09:35 PM
Sammy - I've never seen chicken and waffles in NYC, first time I tried that was in LA, of all places...darn good though, and i introduced myself to Keenan Ivory Wayans in that restaurant /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

03-20-2007, 10:28 PM
BND - Whatever and if it bothers u dont read my opinions it wont change it. what is the big deal. it aint even that serious

Leonie, I stayed so long because of my family, remember.

I don't have all negative things to say about NYC, too bad the intrepid wasn't there when you went, that is very nice. Also, too bad you had to stay only in Manhattan, the Aquarium is breathtaking.

But on another note, until Xavier puts up a sign that says "only opinions agreeing with XYZ member shoudl post here" I am free to post where I want

03-20-2007, 11:33 PM
I lived there for 11 years and never faced any crime. It's a beautiful city, especially given it's diversity(West Indians, Latinos and Hispanics are heavily concentrated there) and then there's broadway and so on. Lots of opportunities for young people too.

NYC has no more crime than anywhere else, believe me.

I want to try Katz next time! Glad you enjoyed your trip as well....thanks for stopping by.

The Apollo was a very special experience....i felt so in awe to be there on stage where some of the greats have had their start....Seeing the Dakota building and Strawberry Fields really made me sad...such a senseless death................YOU LIVE IN NY TOO!!!????

My memory is not the best but here goes

the tree was donated by the mayor of the city to i want to say a musician by the name of Bo Jingles.....musicians would gather under the "tree of hope" hoping for a gig wishing for a lively hood (paying gig)...the tree was later removed and planted in front of the Lafayette (a performing venue) when the Lafayette was torn down the tree was also. It was then cut into chunks and one part was donated to the Apollo. It's suppose to symbolize luck....so before going on stage hopefuls rub the "tree of hope" for good luck.

That was my first time having chicken n waffles because i thought "that doesn't go together" and being from the south i don't normally order fried chicken out because well i won't taste home made and so often it's not done "right" but that chicken was so crispy, so golden....so good and the waffles were good as well....very good meal!

It truly is a melting pot and has A LOT to offer....like i said i could tell it has a dark side as any other "major" city could have i didn't go there with rose colored glasses on and tried to keep my wits on point....it's like no other place i've ever visited...thanks for stopping by!

your memory's not as bad as you thought /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif..the musician you were thinking about was Bill "Bojangles" Robinson....here's a story about the Tree of Hope (http://www.bigapplejazz.com/tree_of_hope.htm)

let me know the next time you're in town, you can take me to the Statue of Liberty /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/704555_dwl.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/704555_dwl.gif

Thank you for sharing your experience of NYC. I've been there a few times and I felt the city truly had a very special electric vibe. I loved it. The culture, the mix of people, the intensity, the architecture...all of it. Plus, I loved doing all the touristy things to. Being an immigrant I especially loved Ellis Island. I too have been to the Apollo and that place is special indeed.

Thank you again.

ps...You and Mr. Sammy make a lovely couple!

Less than most big cities in the US.

Still, I lived there from age 5 to age 28, most of my life, and I did get into a few situations in that time...and dealt with them all, obviously, 'cause I'm still here /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I have a different, new found love of NYC. You have inspired me to start my own thread (don't want to hi-jack yours).

Thanks for the pictures and continued inspiration to visit and BE in New York! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70458-applaud.gif
