Buenos tardes mi amigas!

Just returned from my exile in Costa Rica last night. What a great place to spend a little down time...so beautiful and natural. We didn't have the best of weather but what can you expect when you visit the rainforest at the tail end of the rainy season? You can expect rain and mist with your bits of sun, but never a lack of wildlife and natural wonders around every corner. We loved the people and place a great deal and i look forward to visiting again sometime in the dry season. Regardless the weather, everything in Costa Rica is Pura Vida, as they say.

So anyway....i've got a few pics that aren't pathetically blurry....care to see?

A little background:

First time in a new country so i opted to contract our travel services witha company i found on the internet called

http://www.costaricantrails.com/Images/top02.jpg

COSTA RICAN TRAILS

they were great to work with, allowing me to custom design our itinerary, using their drivers part of the time, and a rent a car for the middle of the trip. I highly recommend them.

we spend our first and last nights in Alejuela, which is in actuality the town the airport is in (not San Jose). nice small hotel called the Buena Vista, located high in the hills on a coffee plantation overlooking the city with the mountains in the background. just lovely. we arrived in the evening, so it was dark, all we could see were the city lights, and feel the warm moist air. Great start tho. Next morning, our driver arrived to transport us to Manuel Antonio. A stunning 3 1/2 hour drive, much of it along the Pacific coast. My first view of the pacific was grand. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70377-loveeyes.gif

We made one stop along the way to view some crocs under the bridge over the Rio Tarcoles, a very touristy thing to do, but still, they were BIG crocs. Did i take a pic? no....crocs don't do it for me i guess.

The country side was a beautiful green patchwork of rolling hills and farmlands...the roads are much better than i expected...but i will caution, they are WINDING and STEEP. I'd hate that in one of those tourismo buses.

Finally we arrived at Manuel Antonio and were deliverd to our hotel, Costa Verde. One word for the view from our studio plus digs? AMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZING. We hard a hard time dragging our butts away from it.

is that gorgeous or what? we slept each night listening to the waves below...the place had no windows just big screens...even without AC we were way comfy.

We could hear Howler Monkeys in the trees nearby all day, and boy do they howl. It's more of a roar really...fascinating noises eminating from the rainforest. They were pretty easy to spy in the trees, swinging in groups from tree to tree...what fun!

actually that's an old plane they were getting ready to put up on a metal structure...apparently they plan to make another restaurant similar to the one they already have on the hill. Anybody recognize this flag? Closest i can come is a civil ensign from Columbia.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c228/loopstoo/costarica/2007_1107costarica0182.jpg

the restaurant on the hill is named El Avion and is made from an interesting item from the sordid past that is the Iran-Contra affair. It's a 1954 Fairchild C-123. It was purchased for the Nicaraguan Contras by the U.S. and was being readied in a hangar at the San Jose airport. But when the Iran-Contra scandal broke, the plane never made it to Nicargua and was abandoned in San Jose. The owners of Costa Verde bought it and hauled it in pcs to Manuel Antonio, where they created the restaurant known locally as Ollie's Folly.

the people you see there ARE costa rican...as you know...i suck at taking people pics.

most of those pics are taken from MA central...the public beach, it's a tourist town. the beach is nice and wide, and the sand hard, so it's easy to walk on. good size tides there, which surprised me. closest actual tico town is Quepos, just before MA. i saw a few images as we drove thru the country, that i KNOW you would have been out of the car and shooting. 2 little kids playing in a doorway, a farmer sitting on the side of the road... the place is beef country, lots of beef cows foraging in the rolling hillsides. lots of steakhouses and the beef is excellent.

the beach sounds incredible.. id love to be walking there.. so vast. open..

so you ate a lot of beef?? i remember in guatemala... while the beef in general was horrendous.. there was one man who got his beef from somewhere. maybe CR for all i know.. he had a bar.. and he made the best burger ive ever had.... i think on that trip.. bruce and i went many times. for a couple of drinks and that great burger.. hamburguesa..

i didn't see much in the way of different foods. a typical breakfast consists of a costa rican version of rice and peas known as pinto gallo, scrambled eggs with sour cream, plantains and tortillas.

we found a nice beachside shack where they served an excellent lunch of grilled chicken or pork, pinto gallo, plantains, salad and a chutney like sauce called picalillo. all the food we ate was very good, the beer there was nasty tho.

lots and lots of one lane bridges. two in particular in the area between Quepos and MA are in the process of being replaced...you can see why...lol

one big truck can take 20 mins to cross this little bridge...at a crawl.

pinto gallo is what??

i think costa rica is not third world like nicargua... el salvador.. guatemala..even mexico in the country.... so you probably had wonderful water... and that's great............nothing worse then doubled over in pain and acute diarhea..believe me..............

exciting to be on the road.. who is driving you or scott?

so we've now ventured out of our comfort zone and are attempting to make our way from the Central Pacific to the Northern Plains. the first town we land in is Quepos, fortunately, on a sunday. After we drive in circles 3 or 4 times, we find ourselves on a main road...yay! Unfortunately, it's headed south and not north. dang. I finally get out and attempt to engage a few elderly men on the roadside. Donde esta Parrita? i say with my map in hand looking pathetic.

The ticos are friendly people and seem to delight in showing off their lovely country. whenever we needed help we'd find them to be a constant souce of help, information and smiles. Most don't speak english, but will still try to help. If you make an effort to speak or say some words in spanish, and throw in many a muchas gracias, they appreciate and enjoy the interaction con mucho gusto. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

ennyways...i wish i could say i have pics from this road trip, but i don't. we did pretty well once we found our way out of Quepos and up the main road to Jaco...until we headed inland. Somewhere in Esparza we got turned around again...discovered this only when several miles up the road we stopped for a brew and i found some english speaking folks. Are we headed for San Ramon? San Ramon she says...we just came from there...pointing to the road we just came from. SIGH. little backtracking to do after this nasty Imperial....in the meantime, here's some costa ricans. you can see why i don't take people pics.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c228/loopstoo/costarica/2007_1107costarica0190.jpg

the wrong turns had us both stressing a little...so i was hesitant to ask the hubby to pull over cause i saw something pretty to shoot. lol once we found the right road inland...its was up and down over and around...gorgeous drive through two cloud forests high high in the mtns...reminiscent of the blues. the area appeared to be an agri area specializing in plants for the foreign houseplant markets. a patchwork of tropical plants for miles and miles. amazing, with a few waterfalls falling over the higher hills. we'd drive through misty areas here and there...stopping once more in a little area called Los Lagos for a break. I noticed the gal there was decorated for christmas already....lol...i guess when you don't celebrate thanksgiving, the decorating starts even earlier. we also noticed roadside vendors selling straw creches, i'd say the equivalent of our roadside christmas wreath sales here.

after a long day of driving, we finally arrived at our destination for the next 3 nights. The Arenal Volcano....it's has been continually active since 1968. it was late in the afternoon and the area was shrouded in mist, little did we know it would stay that way for the whole time we were there....well, actually mist is a kind word for much of this stay. oh well, i'm still enjoying myself. heck, we've arrived in time to see the Pats and Colts play. Middle of the 3rd quarter, Pats down....but go on to win the game! We chuckled our butts off laughing at the commentary in spanish. it sounded something like babble babble babble Tom Brady! babble babble babble Peyton Manning hahahahah...we loved it so much we listened to the after game recap too. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/704555_dwl.gif

the cabins here were pretty basic, with a front porch facing the volcano and a back porch facing the rainforest, and ranchlands in the distance. we sat on the front porch wondering where the volcano was while we drank our coffee. it's a good thing we were up early because for a brief moment, the right slope appeared, then the left, and finally the whole Arenal appeared before us. 3mins later it was gone...very mystical place this was, you can see why much folklore is associated with volcanoes. the misty clouds seem to sorround the thing all day, at times wanting to lift and teasing you with a peak of a slope, then just as quickly, the misty clouds would roll in again, enveloping the whole volcano. grrrrrrrrr....and oooooooooo at the same time. lol

we were glad to have a car here, as the road beyond the hotel was interesting and reminded us of driving the paper company roads at camp, except it was more of a jungle than a forest with bromeliads growing thick on all the trees...amazing. we took a drive up to Arenal lake which is the biggest lake in the country, 20 miles long, manmade. I imagined how much prettier this would be if i could just see the damn volcano...oh well. We drove the dirt road behind the volcano to the Arenal Observatory lodge, when its clear and you go here at night, the volcano is a show of spewing lava! damn the weather.

on the other hand....we were really fortunate that we weren't rained on at any time throughout this 2 mile hike...so blessings are appreciated.

after we left there, we decided to check out another lodge down the road i had considered, but rejected due to the location. Arenal Lodge was high up in the same area so we stopped by to take in the place...and it was stunning. I would def choose this next time, knowing now that the trek is not that bad. The lodge is more intimate and remote...much our preference...with beautiful gardens and a great infinity pool. The bartender there told us he feeds a blue macaw on the property, but he wasn't to be seen today. Still, they had an incredible variety of wildlife/birds/flowers up here. As we sat, the day gave way to mist, then finally outright pouring. sighhhhhhhh.

at least not before i got a few pics up here.

i'm not a fan of heights either, have no interest in any amusement park rides, you'd not get me on the BABY rollercoaster never, i had a huge fear of flying up until fairly recently. I'll admit my first few steps on the hanging bridges were shaky. They swayed...and you could feel the bounce as you stepped...kinda creepy. BUT, i just focused on the treetops and views. I was so intent on seeing everything i could see...and not turning back like a baby, that i eventually overcame the height thing. Nature wins every time. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

to give you an idea of some of the heights tho...

hmmmmmmm where to next? I asked the hubby that, he says Alaska. Now does that sound warm to you? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cold.gif

I'd like to return to Costa rica and try a couple other areas. One being one of the most diverse areas on the planet known as the Osa Peninsula. That and the Carib side of CR, Puerto Viejo i hear is nice.

the bigger issue for me is that riding the zip lines...is more of a thrill ride, than an opportunity to watch birds, spot wildlife in the trees or enjoy the views as you're flying along so fast.

Yes I understand that but if you are a thrill ride person then you could do both! The thrill only last so long, then off to do some bird watching. But then I would ride the biggest roller coaster in the world over and over and over....

WOWZA YOWZA!!! I saved this for a time slot I knew I would be relatively uninterrupted and it was sooooo worth the wait! I am sorry the weather kinda sucked, but it still looks gorgeous! I am so jealous of the flora and fauna you saw so close, and the beach looks magnificent. Great idea to buy a rocker! Did you get it yet? Home or camp? Wow. Did I say wow? I am not sure that I could do the bridges...would try like heck though. It must have been amazing to be in the lower canopy. I've been meaning to respond to this sooner...been a bit busy packing here.

Would you believe that I have never actually been to Costa Rica...there was a time when I was thinking of doing some volunteer work there and did alot of research on the country...so sometimes when I hear about something I remember that from my research and it was like I was almost there. I was on the track to go there but it didn't work out. I was going to help teach english and build a few things....lol. I have a couple of friends that live there and they just love it so one of these days I hope to spend some time there. I'm especially interested in checking out all the eco-tourism they have there...seems they are quite far along as far as that.

Thank you so much for sharing all your pics and the report.. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70409-waytogo.gif
