Re: Jamaican Dog Sled Team

here is some fine reading on the Jamaican sled dog team in their blog. Musher newton recently completed one of the toughest races in the world, Yukon Quest in 13th place. A stellar performance which was only outdone by Newton winning the coveted "Spirit of the Yukon award for “exemplifying the spirit of the Yukon Quest”

    Re: Jamaican Dog Sled Team

TSmall you MUST go visit the team headquarters! I beg yuh. This is such a wonderful organization! The fact that they are doing so well and are so respected in the mushing community for the care they give their dogs is phenomenal. The dogs in Jamaica are adopted from the animal shelters and they do much good for the Jamaican SPCA.

In fact, check this from their blog...

From the sun-kissed beaches and tropical paradise of Jamaica comes a story of second chances. Rescued from the mean streets and animal shelters of Kingston, 12 stray dogs are trained to be the stars of Jamaica’s first dog sled racing team. The crew, spearheaded by pop superstar Jimmy Buffett, brings the unlikely meeting of a traditionally snow-bound sport to the sand and surf.

But it is not just the dogs that are given a second chance. The team’s dog mushers are given the opportunity of a lifetime as they cultivate their love of animals while receiving an education and traveling the world.

Together this motley, mutt-ley crew is winning hearts AND winning races.

    MUSH MON!

EXCITING news from the Jamaican Dog Sled Team!

I'll merge this thread with the sticky topic down the road but this is worthy of it's own topic!

Newton is registered to run in 2010 Iditarod!

On Saturday in Wasilla, Alaska, Newton Marshall of the Jamaica Dogsled Team (JDT) officially signed on to test his skills on the 2010 Iditarod.

Three-time champion Lance Mackey, who will be training Marshall as he prepares for the race, was on-hand in Wasilla to deliver the required documentation. He was noticeably excited to have the opportunity to partner with JDT.

“Newton has proved himself to be courageous and able to beat the odds as he did last year at the Yukon Quest,” said Mackey. “I am proud to be a part of the team that will see Newton complete the last great race on earth.”

Marshall will be a rookie racing the Iditarod, but proved he is qualified to face this test, having raced the Yukon Quest in 2009 and winning the Challenge of the North Award as a result. This award was given for his perseverance in spite of all the odds against him. Yukon Quest race officials selected Marshall as the award recipient.

“I can’t wait to return to Alaska to run the Iditarod,” said Marshall. “I know Lance will have a great team ready for me and I fell in love with the area this past winter. It’s going to be great!”

The 2010 Iditarod begins next March in Anchorage.

The Jamaica Dogsled Team is sponsored by Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, Chukka Caribbean Adventures, WestJet Vacations, Alpine Aviation and Annamaet Petfoods

What is most exciting is that Lance Mackey is going to help Newton in the race! This is so awesome, I can't even put it into words. We're gonna have to have a Iditarod party in march!!!

Lance Mackey signing up for Newton!
